Somerset RFU – Katie Reynolds v Dorset & Wilts

Hornettes make up a third of Somerset team…

In the first match of this seasons South West Divisional Rugby Championship U18 Girls, five Hornettes players were selected in the team to represent Somerset. Amy Coles in the centre, Katie Reynolds at flanker, Natasha Foley No 8, Eleanor Febrey at prop and Isabella Parselle on the wing.

The match against Dorset and Wiltshire was played at Banbury RFC in Oxfordshire.

Within a short space of time Somerset found themselves two tries down due to some poor handling allowing the opposition to gain the ball with ease. The players realised that they had to improve their performance and replied with a try of their own, only to see another try scored against them. But a try just before half time saw them finish the half 15 points to 10 down.

The second half was a totally different story with Somerset turning the tables and coming out on top in all areas of the game. Soon after the restart Amy Coles made a fine run and scored a converted try under the posts to put Somerset in front for the first time. Then followed a further three tries one of which was converted.

In the final quarter Dorset and Wiltshire made a strong comeback but they could not breakdown the Somerset defence which held strong. The final score was 15 points to 34 in favour of Somerset, the opposition being prevented from scoring at all in the second half.

The Hornettes players all gave fine performances with Febrey strong in the scums with hard running from her as well as Foley. There was good running in the backs with Parselle and Coles, the latter scoring a try. Reynolds produced her trademark crunch tackles to halt the opposition in their tracks.

All the players really enjoyed the experience and can take a lot of credit from how they performed. It was how the coaches wanted them to play and they really showed their quality.

Amy is a student at Weston College, Isabelle – Clevedon 6th Form, Natasha – Backwell 6th Form and Eleanor Hartpury College.

Katie is a Year 11 pupil at Worle Community School in Weston-super-Mare where she has played football, hockey and rugby with distinction. She was recently awarded the girls sports trophy.

All of the girls would like to thank everyone who have helped them achieve this standard of rugby. This includes the coaches at Hornets RFC and the various schools and colleges that they attend. Not forgetting the parents who provide the transport for both matches and training.

Following the match all girls were presented with a Somerset badge in recognition of playing rugby at county level.
