Hornettes girls playing for Somerset U18…
In the second match of this seasons South West Divisional Rugby Championship U18 Girls, four Hornettes players were selected in the team to represent Somerset. Amy Coles fullback, Eleanor Febrey at hooker, Natasha Foley second row and Katie Reynolds at flanker.
The match against Cornwall was played at Camborne RFC in Cornwall.
From the start Somerset had total control of this match in all departments. The forwards were both strong in attack and defence and the backs took every opportunity to run at the opposition.
The Cornwall tactic of kicking the ball over the top saw the Hornette’s fullback Amy Coles gathering the ball and running straight back at them, causing all sorts of problems for the Cornish defence. Somerset soon scored two quick tries to make them 10 points to nil up.
Somerset continued to test the resolve of the Cornish defence which held out until just before half time when Coles’ efforts were rewarded with a try. This gave Somerset a 15 points to nil lead at the break.
The second half saw Somerset enjoying the lion’s share of the possession and taking control of the game. The three Hornette’s forward players of Febrey, Reynolds and Foley combined well in both defence and attack. They were either running at the opposition in attack or putting in some very strong tackles in defence.
In this half Somerset scored another four tries with no reply. The final try being scored by the captain Febrey. This gave a final score of 35 points to nil in favour of Somerset.
Amy is a student at Weston College, Natasha attends Backwell 6th Form, Katie a Year 11 pupil at Worle Community School in Weston-super-Mare and Eleanor Hartpury College.
This was a long day for all concerned and a special thanks was given to the parents for providing the transport to Camborne. The travelling time being three hours each way.
